ROUNDUP: Cool Stuff on the Internet Vol. 5
It's time for another round of Cool Stuff on the Internet! Here's some fun stuff I found recently:
You may be familiar with the internet sensation of "Women Laughing Alone with Salad," (a stock photo rockstar, if such a title existed), but these photos somehow make even less sense. The above picture, for instance, seems to lack any discernible meaning or message - is it a play on 'sweet dreams' or something? Although he is definitely not dreaming, as evidenced by his haunting stare. If you're into seeing things like crash test dummies in a loving embrace, a child earnestly sniffing a cactus or two adult men sharing a single white turtleneck sweater then, please, take a gander.
Pictured above is the magnified contents of a random drop of sea water - yes, the same water you frolic in, and which occasionally ends up in your mouth. I know there are obviously sea creatures in the sea. I just don't like it when science is all "just in case you were trying to forget that you're dunking your whole body in a fish's toilet, here is some gross stuff you probably swallowed along the way. LOL!" I don't like the idea that something is so small I can't see it, yet also somehow has, like, 10 legs. Also, what are those curly little things?! Glad you asked - here's a breakdown of each new friend.
Let's take a moment to recover with what is, undoubtedly, one of the cutest things to happen on the internet. From the people who brought you "Tiny Hamsters Eating Tiny Burritos" comes a tiny birthday party full of tiny presents and a tiny birthday cake for a tiny hedgehog. There's just no room for complaining here...this is about as good as it gets. Also, don't miss the cameo from the aforementioned tiny hamsters!
In case you're ever down on yourself for not having a hobby, or maybe having an embarrassing one, please keep in mind that some dude out there is actually dedicating his time, energy and van space (of course he drives a van) to collecting every single VHS copy of the movie Speed ever made (although he also has some laser discs for bartering). He's also wearing two pairs of sunglasses in the article photo so...you know. Part of me likes this and part of me wishes I had a copy just so I could keep it from him.
I'm sure some (most?) of you are like, "uh, cool...a cracker in the bottom of a cup," but when I see this picture I feel a deep calmness in my very being (and I also kinda want a Ritz). Much like "Things Organized Neatly" this tumblr gives me the satisfaction of seeing order and harmony through the lens of everyday objects. Why does it feel so satisfying to see a bottle cap fit snugly into a sink drain? I don't knooooow, but it feels so right.
In this vintage clip, top fashion designers predict what kind of crazy fashion hijinks we'd have gotten up to by the year 2000. Much like most future predictions (e.g. flying cars, robot maids, the value of Beanie Babies) these are pretty off, but entertaining nonetheless. Apparently, we should be covered in sheer mesh by now so that we can, presumes the video's narrator, "catch the males." Also, one of them thought we would wear lightbulbs in our hair. Seems dangerous.

DIY: Ring Holder
I wasn’t wearing most of my rings because I couldn’t see them or find them, so I decided I really needed one of those fancy ring cases like you’d see at a jewelry store or craft fair where they’re all laid out one by one. I get on these obsessive binges where I convince myself I NEED something and that it’s totally worth $25 and will make my life SO MUCH BETTER.
Then I usually snap back into reality and have an A-HA! moment where I see that, once again, DIY is the answer! This one was so easy, cheap and practical that I thought I just had to share!
What You Need
Foam Curlers (enough to fill the box lid - mine were $1 per 10 pack at the dollar store)
Hot Glue Gun
Decorative Paper
Decorative Trim (optional)
Pencil
Scissors
Total Cost: Less Than $5.00
How To Make It
1. Trace each side of your shoe box lid on the back of your decorative paper. Cut each piece out and hot glue them to the sides of the box.
2. Remove all of the plastic parts from your curlers (set aside for some kind of amazing project and if you think of one let me know – I have 40 of them!). Apply glue to one end of a curler and press the end of another curler against it. Hold until set.
3. Continue to make chains of curlers wide enough to fit snugly inside your box lid. Remember, you can cut these curlers easily if needed. Make enough chains to fill the height too.
4. Glue the end of one curler chain to the inside of the box lid. Lay a line of glue across the lid where the chain will be and press the chain into it. Glue the other end of the chain to the other side of the inner lid. Continue until the lid is full.
5. I chose to add a vintage lace trim to mine to cover the edges. To do so, just cut strips to the right length and glue at the corners and along the sides.

OBSESSED: Sistema Containers
I know it might seem a little over the top to declare an obsession
with a to-go lunch container, but hear me out, ok?
Have you ever dreamed you could conveniently and securely transport your entire lunch in one container whilst keeping everything safe and separated? What’s that – you haven’t really ever thought about it? Oh, well maybe you’re more the type to dream about life ambitions or world peace, but I had a dream for the perfect segmented lunch container and it came true!
There are several models made by Sistema, but I’d like to express my love for one in particular: the Klip It Lunch Cube. This mighty lil’ guy, which I have in both a dazzling blue/green combo as well as a snappy purple/pink permutation, can hold an entire salad on top, plus a container of dressing, a pile of croutons and some tangerine slices without your lettuce getting all citrus-y and your croutons losing their crunch. To quote the great SchoolinPJs.com commercial, “but how is this possible?” I’ll show you:
The top is a separate section with snap closure which perfectly fits a sandwich, salad, slice of square pizza or general leftover type goodness. Oooh, ahhhh.
The bottom half has two sections, one slightly wider than the other, which are great for pretzels, crackers, fruit, baby carrots, chips – you name it. It’s a great place to stash a tiny container (of which I have many – got an 8 pack at Staples of all places for $1.00!) to hold peanut butter, dressing, dip, salsa, whatever.
I’ve been using these containers for about a year and I was battling a pretty strong addition last spring – I couldn’t go within a 2 mile radius of my Old Navy, where I bought them, without getting a fix…until I ran out of storage room. Now I have a happy collection and enjoy (because this is now how I derive pleasure, I guess) prepping lunches for the week ahead of time and having several bright containers looking back at me every time I open the fridge for a glass of water. I know this sounds crazy, but I have to assure you I'm not - I know on paragraph five of a rave about plastic containers sanity may not be taken for granted.
My love for Sistema containers stems from my admiration and fascination with Bento boxes (this site could mesmerize me for hours!) and while these are different, I do get that feeling of smart storage with a little fun. Plus my sandwich never gets pickle juice on it so this is basically the second coming, right?
You can find Sistema containers at The Container Store and on Amazon and my local Old Navy has been carrying them by the checkout at about $6.00 for the past year or so. Drool over more Sistema containers on their website.

DIY: Bangle Holder
Remember those bangles made from a Pringles can that I featured a tutorial on recently? Well, it turns out making them is kind of addictive. Only one problem: bangles are kind of a pain to store. Solution: a handy DIY bangle holder!
What You Need
> A Solid Base (I’m using a circular piece of wood from the craft store – it was about $1.50)
> Aluminum Foil Roll or Paper Towel Roll (foil rolls are more narrow but thicker and sturdier – that’s what I’m using)
> Hot Glue
> Decorative Paper (I’m using GLITTER PAPER!)
> Scissors
> Paint, ribbon and/or embellishments (optional)
How to Make It
1. Trace the top of your roll on your decorative paper and cut out the circle, leaving a 1/4" border. Got glue this circle over one end of the roll and secure the border with more glue.
2. Measure your roll against your decorative paper and trim paper to fit both the height and circumference of the roll. Hot glue the paper onto the roll.
3. Paint or decorate your base piece if desired. I painted mine silver.
4. Glue your covered roll in the center of the base, holding it in place until dry and set. You can also add a line of hot glue around the perimeter of the roll where it meets the base and cover with ribbon, a string of craft pearls or whatever you like to conceal this seam.
That’s it! Stack your bangles on the roll for a great vertical storage solution to cluttered jewelry collections. Now you have an excuse to make more Pringles can bangles…
