BEAUTY: Top 10 Beauty Products of 2016

Okay, for real? 2016 was not the greatest. Perhaps you've heard? Putting that aside for a moment (we all need a break from the fear/anger/uncontrollable googling sometimes, right?), I want to reflect on the best beauty products I found this year. Some are new, some are just new to me, but they all nestled their way into my heart in 2016 and look like they won't be moving out in 2017, either.

In no particular order...

L'oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara

in Blackest Black Waterproof

I want to shed a tear from how much I love this stuff, and I can do so comfortable because this little baby is waterproof! Take it from a frequent casual crier! I've worked my way through drugstore mascaras (there was even a spreadsheet involved at one point. whatever.) and I'll never stray again. Gold mirrored packaging? OKAY. The brush is ever so slightly angled, and the old school bristles (no silicone here) taper from large to smaller toward the tip. You get a realistic fanned-out falsies look, and the dry formula holds a curl all damn day. It's one of those love-at-first-swipe mascaras - I don't know why I never hear about this stuff because it's the actual best.

Colourpop Super Shock Shadow in Weenie

Weenie on the left!
Honestly, I don't know if there's another eyeshadow I wore more often in 2016 than this! It's perfect for a quick swipe of color, or a full on metallic sheen in-your-face kinda eye. The rose gold shade is over-the-top pigmented and flatters many skin tones. Did I mention this is the softest eyeshadow I've ever swiped my finger across? Well, IT IS. Read more about my love for this eyeshadow here.

NYX Micro Brow Pencil in Ash Brown

The search is over! I've tried gels, creams, other pencils - even high end ones - but there's just something about this one. The pencil is very thin, giving you the ability to draw tiny hair-like strokes and define the border of a brow without looking like you took a Crayola to your face. This shade is dead on for me, and I love that it's a true ashy color - no secret red tinge here! I've already bought this like four times, guys. IT'S THE ONE!

Skinfood Salmon Darkcircle Concealer Cream in #1

My sister opened my eyes (face pun!) to this Korean wonder product and I'm so glad she did! The texture is super creamy, so it never accentuates dryness around your eyes, or pulls your skin when you pat it in. In fact, it totally moisturizes that area, leaving a smooth and perfectly blended finish that works wonders in brightening up your skin. The pigmentation is great, and I kind of feel like this tub will last forever, which I'm totally fine with.

Wet n Wild Contour Palette in Dulce de Leche

This is a real score, because I bought on a whim when it was on sale for, like, less than two bucks. The powder is soft and blend-able (though you'll be on fallout patrol) and the shade is pretty perfect for me. I was used to a very cool-toned contour, and thought this might be a hair too warm-toned, but it turned out to be just what I needed. The staying power has been good for me, and I grab this guy almost every time I do my makeup. Worth it for the contour shade alone!

NYX BB Cream in 02 Natural

Ugh. Choosing face makeup is hard. When I needed a new go-to, days of research and review scouring left me overwhelmed. I impulse purchased this, and ended up digging it a lot. All that obsessive research went unused, and things still ended up great. I feel like there's a lesson I'll refuse to learn in there somewhere. This BB is the perfect skin-melding formula to even out tones, and (mostly) cover blemishes, but not look or feel mask-like at all. I never feel it! You can clumsily slap it on with your fingers or carefully blend it with a foundation brush, and either way it seems to dissolve into your face within minutes, making you look like a clearer version of yourself. Gotta note that the shade range is criminal - three similar-looking colors for fair to light-medium skin, which is bullshit and dismissive. I happen to fit right in the middle of their range, but they still lose a point for this.

Milani Everyday Eyes Palette in Bare Necessities

I've already told you how much I dig this palette, and my feelings remained strong throughout '16. Just a perfect neutral eye palette, with excellent pigmentation, and some serious shimmer in several shades. With the addition of metallic gold you can do something a little more glam too, and you'll be hard pressed to find a day that this palette doesn't give you exactly what you need (at least when it comes to eyeshadow).

Maybelline The Loaded Bolds Lipstick in Smoking Red

Anyone who's into lipstick doesn't need any more red lipsticks - I'm sure there's a scientific theory about this - but I grabbed this anyway because it's slightly different than my other reds. It's a vampy deep red, yet still bright and easy to wear. Not quite a black cherry, but definitely not a cherry red (not a girl, not yet a woman), this shade falls flatly in between those two different, yet confusingly similar-sounding, shades. It's opaque in one swipe and creamy enough not to dry you out. It's perfect for fall because it's basically the color of autumn leaves and magic. For a cheap thrill that turns into more, you can't really beat it.

Tocca Perfume Rollerball in Florence

I picked up a pack of four Tocca mini rollerballs hoping I'd love one, but it turned out I loved them all! Florence has been the standout, though, and the sweet mix of bergamot and gardenia gives me this instant feeling of nostalgia and happiness that I can't quite place. I have no memories associated with this scent, but somehow it tricks me into thinking I do! I still have more than half of this mini left, but I'd be open to upgrading to full size when the time comes.

Maroma Perfume Oil in Night Jasmine

This was a random find at a local hippie store that sells eco-friendly toothpaste alongside fresh eggs from chickens down the street. I guess you could say I wasn't looking for perfume there. When I smelled this oil, though, I was instantly flooded with the memory of a garden I played in as a child. The memory had been trapped in my brain and this shook it free! This is a sweet, sultry jasmine and it usually makes people tell me that I smell good, which is always a bonus.
My pretties...

BEAUTY: Milani Everyday Eyes Palette Review

Milani Everyday Eyes Palette in Bare Necessities

Maybe this is just me, but I haven't heard much chatter around the internet about these new-ish eyeshadow palettes from Milani called Everyday Eyes Powder Eyeshadow Collection. That could be attributed to the less-than-catchy name, but it definitely can't be attributed to the quality of the product. This thing is amazing.

I'm not one to get the vapors from a neutral palette, but sometimes a girl needs a basic collection in her stash. Looking for an affordable option, I found this guy, and what was supposed to be an occasional necessity became a daily workhorse.

The Basics: You get six shadows, a dual-ended brush and a handy set of instructions on the back of the palette, if you need a reference (see above). Each shadow serves a purpose and is labeled as such, like 'base' and 'crease' but you can, and should, use them in any combo you see fit.

Why I Love It

  • The color payoff is great, and not just great for drugstore eyeshadow - legitimately great
  • It's universal - most, if not all, of these shades will work on a variety of skin tones
  • The texture is buttery and smooth
  • Such an easy go-to eye look - goes with everything and simple to apply
  • Great for traveling/throwing in a bag
  • The brush is actually useable!
  • The base shade is worth the price alone - shimmery and beautiful as a highlight
  • The packaging is mirrored gold, plus it snaps closed securely

Milani Everyday Eyes Eyeshadow in Bare Necessities Swatches L to R: Base, Contour, Lid, Crease, Specialty, Liner

Why You Need It

  • It's about $10 at the drugstore and you know it'll be on sale (and if not, it will be soon)
  • It'll make your life easier, at least in a quick-makeup-look kinda way
  • Hey, maybe you don't! But if you need/want a neutral palette this one will satisfy you!
  • It also comes in five other color schemes, including vivid brights
  • You'll wear that shimmery base shade in one way or another every damn day

BEAUTY: 10 Purple Lipsticks Under $10

You know what's the best? Fun lipstick. Even better? Fun cheap lipstick. I mean, I love those over the top, gilded designer tubes that are really more decor than makeup just as much as the next lipstick wearer, but I tend to just admire those from afar...really afar. Like, pinteresting-lipstick-pics-from-the-comfort-of-my-own-couch afar. If you choose to drop $50 on a lipstick, that's amazing for you! (I mean it! You probably have the best throw blankets ever and smell like some kind of exotic vanilla at all times. Let's hang.)

I mostly do the drugstore thing when it comes to makeup, and while it can be hard to find "fun" colors there, purple lipstick has become so insanely popular that there are a bunch of budget options to choose from. Purple: the color of royalty, bruises, and my mother's birthstone. Plus, it looks rad on your face! Yes, you! Literally everyone can wear some shade of purple on their lips because purple lipstick is magic. You should definitely fall under its spell.

Left to Right:

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Brazen Berry
The PERFECT cool toned, medium purple, which I'm convinced looks amazing on everyone.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in Sangria
A deep wine shade that manages to be creamy and NOT patchy - a feat for these kinds of colors!

Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Vintage Pink
Don't let the name fool you - this is a pale purple-pink, which makes a great "nude" for those of us with cool toned lips.

Blackheart Beauty Lipstick in Violet
A beautiful basic purple shade that compliments many skin tones.

Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color in Sugar Plum Fairy
Dark and vampy, this plum shade goes on matte and stays put, and is a near dupe for MAC Rebel!

Left to Right:

Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Shameless
Gives the moisturizing (and minty!) benefits of a balm, and the deep, true purple can't be rivaled.

Rimmel Provocalips in Kiss Fatal
I've already professed my unwavering love for Provocalips and this shade is one of my favorites! Deep, almost berry purple with ALL day wear.

Wet n Wild Fergie Creme Lipstick in D-Vinely Chilled
When you want some sheen and shimmer grab this unique vino-inspired shade.

Jordana Modern Matte Lipstick in Matte It Girl
Matte, smooth and a perfect magenta-toned purple. Much more vibrant in person!

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Color in Va Va Violet
For the violet devotees only; super deep, somewhat fussy, but totally royal.

Rimmel Vintage Pink, Blackheart Beauty Violet, Jordana Matte It Girl, Maybelline Brazen Berry, Wet n Wild Sugar Plum Fairy, Revlon Shameless, Rimmel Kiss Fatal, Wet n Wild D-Vinely Chilled, Milani Sangria, Revlon Va Va Violet

Sometimes I prefer lip swatches so here you go, but OH MAN is it weird to look at so many closeups of your own lips! I do it for you, America:

Left to Right, Top to Bottom:
Rimmel Vintage Pink, Blackheart Beauty Violet, Jordana Matte It Girl, Maybelline Brazen Berry, Wet n Wild Sugar Plum Fairy, Revlon Shameless, Rimmel Kiss Fatal, Wet n Wild D-Vinely Chilled, Milani Sangria, Revlon Va Va Violet

BEAUTY: Milani Bella Eyes Review

Okay, the full name of this shadow is Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow, and this recently launched drugstore line is so good that it was actually worth typing all of that out. Gel powder? Yes, gel powder. Those words together make me think more of the flaky leftover residue one might get from an overzealous Dep application, but what it actually means, according to Milani, is that the formula "starts as a gel and then is transformed by a special process into a stunning powder eyeshadow with pure color and power wear."

What this special process is, or what exactly "power wear" might mean, remains a mystery, but I can tell you that the result is opaque, smooth-as-soft-serve eye colors. You can see the true color and tinsel-esque shimmer right there in the pan. With about 30 shades in the line, there are plenty of reasons to suddenly become very interested in new fake-sounding beauty processes.

The Bella Eyes shadows come in three finishes: Satin Matte (Navy), Shimmer (Emerald) and Metallic (Rouge). I picked up one of each to show you, but I honestly didn't notice a major difference between the formulas. Each seems perfectly shimmery to me, and I liked them so much that I can't say I care about the lack of diversity. To me, this is a useful line of shimmer products in every color you might need, at a price you can totally justify even when you're "being good," or whatever, even though being good should never mean talking yourself out of eyeshadow purchases. You might want to write that down on a little piece of paper and stuff it inside your wallet for future reference. I'll wait.

TOP: Swatches of Bella Navy, Bella Emerald and Bella Rouge.
BOTTOM: Swatches of Bella Navy, Bella Emerald and Bella Rouge over Milani eye primer.

Oh, good - you're back. Hi, there! Here's what I think of each shade:

Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow in Bella Emerald
Green is my favorite color (honorable mention to blue!), so I was excited to try this one. I usually reach for my Wet n Wild Comfort Zone palette when I do a green eye, but this single shade pops so much on its own (with a little Urban Decay Sellout blended around it) that I don't miss the mix of shades I typically use. If your face is a crown (and IT IS), this color becomes your stunning jewels.

Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow in Bella Navy
Blue eyeshadow scares a lot of people, but this shade is deep and rich enough to totally avoid 1980s babysitter vibes. I really love this one, and tend to use it the most of the three shades. Navy blue is a good alternative to black when you wanna lighten it up a bit. It really makes brown eyes sing (don't worry - not literally), but would look majorly powerful on some icy baby blues, as well. VERSATILE.

Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow in Bella Rouge
This shade is unique, especially for the drugstore. You just don't see a lot of cranberry shades there, and I know this because I was looking for awhile. This performs just as well as the other shades, but I don't love it on me - at least how I've styled it here, with black liner and Urban Decay Half Baked. I'm going to find a way to wear it, though, because it's so GORGEOUS that it's practically glowing:

Straight up: I usually don't even mess with single eyeshadows because, in my opinion, all the value (and fun) lies in palettes, but these are smooth and blend-able and just plain beautiful. Maybe you like single shadows, though, or you just need a great highlight shade (Bella Champagne is your guy) and these would fit nicely in your world. They're less than five bucks and sales are frequent. Plus, the gold looks like melted jewelry and the violet looks like some kind of moon rock. You need this.

Have you tried the Bella Eyes shadows yet? Are you a Milani Fan? What's your favorite drugstore eyeshadow?

BEAUTY: 10 Best Shimmer Drugstore Products

Just in time for New Year's Eve, I present to you my favorite shimmer products from drugstore brands. I don't generally do the whole disco ball makeup thing, but a well placed glow here and there can really add a certain pop to your face. Maybe just don't wear all of these at once, okay?
1. Milani Baked Blush in Rose D'Oro: This blush is the absolute best. Great peachy pink shade with built-in shimmer that lasts all day. Holy grail status.
2. Revlon Balm Stain in Crush: A great shiny berry shade that seriously lasts all day. It moisturizes, smells of peppermint, and gets better the longer you wear it.
3. NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cottage Cheese: Perfect for an inner eye or brow bone highlight. The pencil shape makes for easy application with a nearly blinding shine.
4. Sonia Kashuk Highlighter Stick in Sparkling Sands: A close dupe for Benefit's Watt's Up! Great shine and formula. Apply with fingers or a stippling brush.
5. Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze: I cannot adequately express my love for Color Tattoos. TRY THEM, OK? A great neutral shimmery shade that would look good on anyone.
6. Wet n Wild Fergie Shimmer Palette in Rose Champagne Glow: Swirl these shades together for a wonderful sparkle on your cheekbones. Smooth, shiny formula.
7. ELF Shimmering Facial Whip in Lilac Petal: For that serious summer glow, dot this in a "C" shape on your temple and blend. It looks like liquid metal and cost $1.00!
8. NYX Roll On Eye Shimmer in Walnut and Chestnut: Beautiful shimmers to wear alone or together. Great for highlighting the middle of your eyelid. Rolls out smoothly every time.
9. Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eye Shadow in Bella Emerald: Love these shimmery shadows! They're like butter and blend just as well. Emerald is rich and nice for dark eyes.
10. Wet n Wild Eye Shadow Trio in Silent Treatment: Great for a soft look or a more dramatic glistening eye (the light shade is a nice highlight). Soft, blend-able formula.
Swatches L to R: Wet n Wild Silent Treatment, Milani Bella Emerald, Milani Rose D'Oro, Wet n Wild Rose Champagne Glow, ELF Lilac Petal, Maybelline Bad to the Bronze, NYX Cottage Cheese, Sonia Kashuk Shimmering Sands, NYX Walnut and Chestnut, Revlon Crush
